Spurning the option of using the nearby Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, it was decided to erect a Palace of Art for the Scottish Exhibition in 1911. The building, pictured here, was also known as the Fine Art Galleries.
Oil and watercolour paintings, sculpture, architecture and photography were all represented in the various galleries. The theme, "a century of Scottish art", permitted the transfer of earlier works to the Palace of History, where they illustrated historical themes. Scottish birth was the chief qualification for inclusion, although artists such as Sam Bough who were born elsewhere but had worked in Scotland were granted honorary status. The Glasgow Boys featured prominently.
