Scottish National Exhibition, 1911

The royal party arriving to open the Scottish Exhibition of National History, Art and Industry in Kelvingrove Park on 3 May 1911. Large crowds turned out for the ceremony and reports of persistent rain on opening day appear to be contradicted by the shadows thrown by bright sunshine in the photograph.

As in 1901 the new King, in this case George V, was unable to attend the opening. The honour fell to the King's uncle, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught.

The buildings on Park Terrace can be seen on the hill overlooking the Exhibition site. Appropriately, the vehicles seen outside the Palace of History are Argyll cars, built in Alexandria.
