Lyric Theatre

Fire was a constant scourge of Glasgow theatres. In 1953 the Lyric Theatre in Sauchiehall Street was destroyed by fire, but unlike many others it was rebuilt by its owners, the YMCA. A special souvenir programme, illustrated here, was produced to mark its reopening in 1956. A mixed company of leading Glasgow amateurs staged a production of Robert McLellan's The Road to the Isles.

Unfortunately the reprieve proved to be short-lived, as three years later the Lyric was sold and demolished to make way for an office block.
