From its opening in 1910 until 1954, the Alhambra Theatre was owned by Glasgow Alhambra Ltd with Alfred Butt and R H Gillespie as managing directors. International variety acts were attracted to justify relatively high admission prices. The Christmas pantomime became a popular institution.
A change of policy from 1926 saw more musical comedies, revues, plays and opera at the theatre. The Wilson Barrett Repertory Company had regular seasons in the 1940s. Among the famous artistes who appeared in this period were Harry Lauder, Sarah Bernhardt, Anna Pavlova, Gracie Fields and Will Fyffe.
