David MacRae

David Macrae (1796-1881) was a minister of the United Presbyterian Church.

Son of a minister in Sauchieburn, David Macrae was ordained at Lathones, Fife, in 1827. After eleven years there and fourteen years at Oban, he accepted a challenging invitation in 1852 to set up a new congregation in the Gorbals. A new church was opened in Main Street in 1854 and despite being in an area of great poverty, the congregation flourished.

Macrae had great sympathy for the disadvantaged, and supported the cause of reform both in society and in church politics. An ambitious project resulted in the erection of a large new church in nearby Elgin Street, which opened in 1873 with Macrae as minister. He continued to take an active role in the church until his death at the age of 84 in 1881.
