Alexander Bennett McGrigor

Alexander Bennett McGrigor (1827-1891) was a well-known lawyer in Glasgow.

McGrigor served his apprenticeship as a lawyer in the family firm of McGrigor, Murray & McGrigor. He became the head of the firm on the death of his father in 1853 and succeeded to the family estate of Kernock. One of his greatest achievements was the establishment of the Union Railway for which he supervised the legal work involved in getting the Bill through Parliament and oversaw negotiations with all the parties involved. Subsequently, he helped establish the Glasgow Tramway and the Vale of Clyde Tramway.

In 1878 McGrigor was called in to report to shareholders after the collapse of the City of Glasgow Bank and he subsequently played a leading role in settling the many cases involved in the liquidation. His firm of lawyers grew to being one of the largest in the city, and was a major employer. He was also an army volunteer, a noted bibliophile, and a keen supporter of the Liberal Party. He managed to find time to help out in the administration of the University of Glasgow, the Western Infirmary and Queen Margaret College. In 1887 he was chosen to be president of the revived Clan Gregor Society. He was honorary secretary of the Glasgow International Exhibition of 1888.
