Ruthven C Todd (1833-1887) was an accountant and a Volunteer soldier.
Born in Dirleton, Todd spent his apprenticeship years in Edinburgh and Glasgow before setting up in business on his own account in 1859 as an accountant and stockbroker. In the same year he was one of the founder members of the Glasgow Volunteer Rifle Company, Western Section, Number One, which was to evolve into the 1st Lanark Rifle Volunteers. Todd was the treasurer. He rose through the ranks, eventually being appointed Lieutenant-Colonel Commandant in 1874. During his seven years in command, the regiment reached a high peak of efficiency and it was said that the Volunteers could take the field at any time.
An enthusiast for drilling, Todd always had his men trained to a point where they would win a competition or attract favourable comment from inspectors.
