Charles Neaves (1800-1877) was a judge and Solicitor-General for Scotland.
Educated in Edinburgh, Lord Neaves was called to the bar in 1822. He became Solicitor-General in 1852 and in 1854 became a Lord of Session. Neaves spent most of his life in Edinburgh. However, the Justiciary Court visited Glasgow three times each year and Neaves (although elderly and rather deaf by the mid-1870s) acquired a reputation in the city for fairness.
Neaves was a cultivated man and an accomplished verse-writer. He was a director of Edinburgh’s Philosophical Institution, a president of the Heriot-Watt Institution and Rector of the University of St Andrews 1872-1874.
