George Readman

George Readman (1818-1894) was General Manager of the Clydesdale Bank, 1852-1880, and Managing Director, 1886-1887.

Born in Yorkshire and raised in Edinburgh, Readman became cashier in the offices of the Forth & Clyde Canal Co from 1842-1845 and then treasurer to the Clyde Navigation Trust. He joined the Clydesdale Bank as joint manager in 1852 and within months became manager on the death of Henry Brock.

Readman was a firm ally of the bank director James Lumsden Jnr and with his support set out to increase the powers of the manager and the management team. His prudent management helped the Clydesdale survive the banking crises of 1855, 1866 and 1878.

Although he retired to Edinburgh in 1880 to concentrate on the management of his own substantial investment portfolio Readman returned briefly to the Clydesdale in 1886 after the resignation of his successor.
