John Cramb

John Cramb (fl. 1860-1874) was a photographer and a member of the Parochial Board.

Cramb was also a chairman of the Row (Rhu) Parochial Board and a member of Helensburgh's town council. In 1873 he stood unsuccessfully against Colonel David Dreghorn for election in Glasgow's Eighth Ward.

A pioneer of photography in the west of Scotland, Cramb's work did not meet with universal approval. In 1862 the British Journal of Photography commented on some of his work exhibited by the Photographic Society of Scotland, remarking snootily that "it is evident that awarding medals for merely pretty and artistic prints is not the best method of advancing the interests of photography as a science". However, his work fetches good prices at auction today.
