George H B MacLeod

Sir George Husband Baird MacLeod (1828-1892) was Regius Professor of Surgery at the University of Glasgow, 1869-1892.

A member of the famous MacLeod dynasty of Church of Scotland ministers, Sir George studied Philosophy and then Medicine at the University and pursued his studies in medicine in Paris before serving as a Staff-Surgeon in the Army Medical Service during the Crimean War, 1854-1856. In 1859 he was appointed Professor of Surgery at Anderson's College of Medicine, a post he held until he succeeded Sir Joseph Lister at the University.

Like most eminent surgeons of his day, MacLeod had a lucrative private practice and The Bailie’s caricaturist portrayed him in a patient’s bedroom. He was Surgeon-in-ordinary to Queen Victoria in Scotland, and was knighted in 1887.
