William Gardner (b1801) was a journalist.
Gardner was born in Glasgow and worked as a warper in the weaving industry before joining the staff of the Glasgow Chronicle in 1826. He worked for many Glasgow newspapers, and by 1874 was the court reporter for the Evening Citizen.
According to The Bailie Gardner had no shorthand, but his prodigious memory allowed him to produce highly accurate and detailed reports of events that were the envy of his colleagues. The Bailie called him “The Father of the Glasgow Press.”
