George Edwin Ewing (1828-1884) was a portrait sculptor.
Ewing was born in Birmingham and worked in London and Liverpool before moving to Glasgow in 1859. His works include busts of Lord Clyde and Sir Daniel Macnee, and monuments to James Jamieson and David Prince Miller in the Necropolis. The bronze statue of Robert Burns depicted by The Bailie’s caricaturist in 1874 was unveiled in George Square on 25 January 1877. 10,000 people are said to have formed a procession from Glasgow Green to attend the unveiling, with as many as 30,000 lining the streets.
In 1875 Ewing’s brother James began working with him in Glasgow. They moved to the USA four years later, and George died in Philadelphia in 1884.
