Prof George Ramsay

George Gilbert Ramsay was Professor of Humanity at the University of Glasgow, 1863-1906, and became Dean of Faculties, 1919-1921.

Ramsay was the nephew of Sir William Ramsay, the Professor of Humanity 1831-1906, and worked as his assistant. Many detected the scent of nepotism in his appointment as his uncle’s successor. In 1874 The Bailie observed that many students disliked him, accusing him of humiliating them with sarcastic remarks in class and snubbing them in public. Undoubtedly his avowed radical Liberal sympathies would not have endeared him to the more Conservative-leaning publication.

A keen sportsman, Ramsay was a particularly enthusiastic ice skater.
