William Burns (1809-1876) was a lawyer. The son of a chemical manufacturer, Burns served his apprenticeship in his home town, Saltcoats. He moved to Glasgow in the 1840s.
Burns campaigned for greater rights for Scotland within the United Kingdom and was involved in fund-raising for the erection of the Wallace Monument in Stirling, which was built 1861-1869. He was a historian and helped organise the Royal Faculty of Procurators' library.
