Peter White was a founder and Chairman of the Glasgow Stock Exchange.
White was born in Dumfriesshire and became an accountant. In 1844 he was one of the founding members of the Glasgow Stock Exchange Association and soon afterwards entered a partnership with Charles Gairdner, as White & Gairdner.
White was also a treasurer and a president of the Institute of Chartered Accountants and Actuaries in Glasgow. He was one of the original investors in the Clydesdale Bank and was close to many of its directors but declined offers to join them on its board. He lived at Newark Castle in Ayr.
