Jane Arthur

Jane Arthur (1826?-1907) campaigned for women's suffrage and was the first woman to serve on a Scottish School Board.

Born in Foxbar in Renfrewshire, Jane Glen was related to the famous thread manufacturers, the Coats family. In 1847 she married the Paisley draper James Arthur who went on to establish Arthur & Co, one of Glasgow's most successful wholesale clothing businesses. They lived on a large estate at Barshaw, near Paisley and their children included Sir Matthew Arthur, Lord Glenarthur (1852-1928).

In 1873 Jane Arthur became the first woman to stand for and be elected to a school board when she was elected to serve on the Paisley board. She was a prominent and vigorous supporter of the movement for women’s suffrage which received growing public support during the 1870s. In memory of her late husband, she established the Arthur Fellowship in 1892 to promote the medical education of women.
