Walter C Smith

Walter Chalmers Smith (1824-1908) was the minister of the Free Tron Church 1862-1876, and Moderator of the General Assembly of the Free Church of Scotland in its Jubilee year, 1893.

Smith was a minister in Fife and in Edinburgh before arriving in Glasgow. A friend of the famous churchman Norman MacLeod, he had a reputation as a liberal in the church. He was a respected author and poet, and a collection of his poetry, Olig Grange, was well received. He wrote several hymns, including “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise.”
