John Nichol (1833-1894 ) was Regius Professor of English Literature at the University of Glasgow.
The son of the eminent astronomer Professor John Pringle Nichol (1804-1859), Nichol Jnr studied at Oxford before his return to the city. He was the author of a novel, Hannibal, which is the reason he is depicted in classical garb in this caricature from The Bailie.
