George Anderson Jr, MP

George Anderson was a businessman and a Glasgow MP from 1868 until 1885.

During the 1870s Anderson was the chairman of the company formed to mine for silver at the Emma Mines near Salt Lake City in Utah. Many Glaswegians invested heavily in the firm and shares soared in price before collapsing in 1873 when it became apparent that production figures were grossly inaccurate. Many shareholders raised an action for damages, resulting in Anderson's personal bankruptcy.

In politics Anderson was a Liberal and was elected to represent Glasgow with William Graham and Robert Dalglish in the remarkable Liberal triumph of 1868. He retired in 1885.
