Henry Glassford Bell (1803-1874) was Sheriff of Lanarkshire 1867-1874.
Educated at Glasgow High School and the University of Edinburgh, Bell became a theatre critic, wrote poetry, and edited the Edinburgh Literary Journal 1828-1831. He became an advocate in 1832, Sheriff Substitute of Lanarkshire in 1839 (one year after acting as junior counsel to Glasgow cotton spinners on trial for conspiracy), and then Sheriff Principal in 1867.
Bell was a staunch Tory, and a patron of the arts. He was the first person in the 19th century to be buried in the nave of the Cathedral.
