A portrait by Joseph Henderson of Alexander Duncan (1833-1921), the secretary and librarian of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow for fifty-five years, from 1865 until 1920.

Duncan played an important role in extending the Faculty's collection of books, for which he produced catalogues in 1885 and 1901. He also wrote the Memorials of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow 1599-1850. He was awarded the honorary degree of LLD by the University of Glasgow in 1898.
