A portrait by John Graham-Gilbert of William Weir (1794-1876), President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow from 1847 to 1849 and the author of its first history, Origin and Early History of the Faculty (1864).
Weir attended Glasgow Grammar School and then the University of Glasgow. He became a member of the Faculty in 1816 and graduated MD from the University in 1829. In 1840 he became a visiting physician at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary.
Weir was a lecturer in Medicine and Secretary of the Portland Street School from 1830 to 1842, and in 1845-1847 lectured in Phrenology (the study of the shape of the skull in relation to character and intelligence) at the Andersonian Institution.
