Alexander Dunlop Anderson

A portrait of Alexander Dunlop Anderson (1794-1871) by Daniel Macnee, 1869. Anderson was the nephew of John, the founder of Anderson's College, and served as President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow between 1852 and 1855. The portrait was commissioned by the Faculty.

Anderson had been an army surgeon, who returned to Scotland to graduate MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1819. He set up a medical practice in Glasgow in 1820 and was admitted to the Faculty the following year. He was a visiting surgeon at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in 1822, 1823 and 1827 and a physician there, 1838-1840. He was also Physician to the Institution for the Deaf and Dumb and became the inaugural Chairman of the Western Medical Club on its formation in 1845.
