Football manager Sir Alex Ferguson, after receiving an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters at Glasgow Caledonian University, July 2001. He was said to be delighted that his old teacher from Broomloan Road Primary School was in the audience to see him receive his award.
After a modest career as a player with several clubs including Glasgow Rangers, Ferguson went on to become Britain's most successful football manager. Aberdeen won numerous domestic trophies, and one in Europe, when he was manager between 1978 and 1986. He moved to Manchester United and by 2004 he had brought eight Premiership titles, five FA Cups, one European Cup- Winners Cup, one League Cup and the Champions League trophy to the Old Trafford trophy cabinet.
The straight-talking Ferguson makes no secret of his origins. A sign proclaiming "ACUMFAEGOVAN" is reputed to hang in his office at Old Trafford, warning visitors what to expect. He is known for his volcanic temper, but is respected for his managerial style and his care for the welfare for his players.
