Like other Clydeside shipbuilders, the Fairfield Shipbuilding & Engineering Co found great difficulty in winning orders during the Great Depression in the early 1930s. Thousands of men were laid off and the yard's fortunes reached a nadir in 1932, a year in which no ships were built there.
In 1933 the West Yard was closed and the business sold to National Shipbuilders Security for only £30,000. It was subsequently acquired by the Lithgow Group and its fortunes revived from the mid-1930s, as orders for warships were placed as part of the Government's rearmament programme.
