Chinese Lanterns c 1889, by John Quinton Pringle (1864-1925).
This unfinished oil painting shows children with lanterns at a burn. Pringle may have taken the idea for this painting from a similar work by Sargent (Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose) which was featured in an 1888 issue of the Art Journal, a magazine which Pringle is known to have read.
An optician by trade, Pringle is better remembered today for his original and unconventional art. As he did not paint professionally he produced only a limited number of artworks, but these were admired by contemporaries such as Muirhead Bone, Fra Newbery and James Guthrie.
