Silk Crepe Dress c 1927

A silk crepe day dress c 1927, stocked by Murielle's of Sauchiehall Street.

The owner of Murielle's, Muriel Hymans, sourced many of the dresses she sold from the fashion houses of London and Paris. She never bought more than one colour of any dress, in order to make sure that none of her customers had to suffer the social embarrassment of turning up to a function in the same outfit. Her dress shop had a loyal, high society clientele, and Mrs Hymans often bought dresses with particular customers in mind - a little like the personal shopper service some stores offer today.

This sleeveless peach-coloured dress has a low scoop neckline and a dropped waistline. A floral design is embroidered around the border of the armhole and neck edges using silver metal threads and floss silk threads in shades of green and pink. The skirt, which is composed of six petal-shaped panels, has been gathered to the waistline to form a small ruff. The borders of each panel are embroidered with a floral design to match the neckline. A large double bow of matching fabric is sewn to the side of the dress at the dropped waistline.
