A black silk jersey evening dress stocked by Murielle's of Sauchiehall Street, c 1972.
Murielle's closed in 1973 after more than sixty years selling fashion clothing to the cream of Glasgow society. A visit to the shop was an experience in itself. Customers had to make an appointment. On arrival, they were shown to a special room in the basement, equipped with two spacious fitting rooms and a mirrored wall. Dresses were laid out ready for trying on, selected with the individual customer's taste in mind.
This dress is sleeveless with a very low plunging V neckline. The front and back neck edges of the bodice are gathered onto a high standing collar which is embroidered with red and gold sequins, circular gold beads and small green circular beads. The waistband has been embroidered in a similar pattern. The dress is tightly fitting to the waist and hips from where the skirt flares to the hem.
