View of Glasgow and the Cathedral

View of Glasgow and the Cathedral by John A Houston (1812-1884).

Houston depicts a mid-Victorian family on an outing to the Necropolis, in the foreground. Glasgow Cathedral is on the right, and tenements and factories stretch down to the river. The large number of factory chimneys indicate the extent of the industrialisation of the city by the mid-19th century.

Although born in Wales, Houston was of Scottish descent. He studied at the Trustees Academy School of Art in Edinburgh before moving to London in 1858 and was best known for his historical paintings.
