A young girl with a straw hat, photographed by Duncan Brown.
Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documented aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s. This girl may be one of his daughters, which would date the image to the 1850s or 1860s. The girl's relaxed posture and the simple, natural elements of the photograph are a strong contrast to the stiff, formal images found on Victorian cartes-de-visite (visiting cards) which became so popular at this time.
