The Saltmarket, photographed by Duncan Brown in the 1880s or 1890s.
This photograph was taken from an upper window in the Justiciary Buildings at the foot of the Saltmarket and looks north towards the Tolbooth at Glasgow Cross. The tram tracks for the horse-drawn trams wiggle down the centre of the street, but apart from one tram and two carts the road is empty of traffic - something that seems amazing from a 21st century perspective. The pavement is bustling with people, however, and all the shops are open for business.
Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
