Foot of Millbrae

A ploughman at the foot of Millbrae Hill c 1889, photographed by Duncan Brown.

Maps dating from 1859 show Burnstyle farmhouse situated on the corner of Millbrae Road and Langside Place, while fields run down the hill towards the White Cart Water. However even in the 1850s new housing was being erected at Langside and this photograph, taken 30 years later, shows Victorian villas through the trees to the right. A road running along the edge of the fields separates the farmland from the new housing.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
