Pollokshields UP Church

Pollokshields United Presbyterian Church photographed by Duncan Brown in the 1880s or 1890s. Women and children are sitting on a bench outside the church. Two men are standing nearby, one of them apparently dressed in a uniform.

Pollokshields UP Church was designed by W F McGibbon in the French Gothic style and built in 1882-1883. The church became a United Free after the union of the United Presbyterian and the Free Church of Scotland in 1900. It was destroyed by fire in 1983.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
