"Waiting on the scraps!"

A cartoon from the early 20th century showing a queue of women and children "waiting on the scraps" outside a flesher's premises. "Flesher" is a traditional name for a butcher.

Too poor to afford to buy decent food, these people are waiting for the butchers to finish work for the day, and put out the bones and waste scraps of meat left over from butchered carcases. Although it is a dark and miserable evening, many of the children are barefoot and poorly clothed.

The window advertisement is for "Home fed veal".
