Playing draughts in Elder Park, c 1955. The men are retired shipyard workers from the nearby Fairfield Shipyard.
When Mrs Isabella Elder had the park laid out in the 1880s, she stipulated that no ball games were to be permitted. However, it was specifically intended for "healthful recreation by music and amusements" and the draughts board was one of many attractions that included a yachting pond, bowling green and bandstand.
