Memorial at Garnethill Synagogue, 1903

A group photo of Garnethill Synagogue members c 1903.

The panel set on the wall at the back reads: "This succah has been erected in loving memory of Rika (wife of Charles Jacobs) by her husband and brothers, August 1903 / Ellul 5663". Charles Jacobs is fourth from the left in the middle row. He was a leading member of the Synagogue and for a time held the post of Treasurer of the Jewish Board of Guardians, an organisation which gave assistance to needy members of the community. A succah (or sukkah) is a term for a temporary building erected during the Jewish festival of Sukkot.
