Kittle Corner in Govan, 1890s.
Kittle Corner was a little square at the corner of Shaw Street and Govan Road. It was popular with local people as a place to meet friends and exchange gossip. Any passers-by could be sure of a bit of banter, not all of it entirely complementary!
Kittle is a Scots word meaning awkward, dangerous or ticklish and could refer to the feelings of passers-by who had to run the gauntlet of sharp-tongued comment from the locals.
