Standing in the doorway are (left) Lizzie Clarkson and (right) Mrs Wotherspoon the Post Mistress. Customers could borrow books at the circulating library here, as well as buying stamps, greeting cards, stationery, toys and newspapers or sending telegraphs. Circulating or subscription libraries were popular in towns and cities across Britain and the Boots and W H Smith shop chains maintained two of the largest in the country.
