A fossil gastropod (Euphemites) from Walkmill Glen near Darnley.
Gastropods are the largest and most sucessful class of mollusc. Scientists have identified 35,000 living species of gastropod and 15,000 fossil ones. Most gastropods have single coiled shells and live in the sea (eg whelks, periwinkles, conches) but some are to be found in rivers, or in moist areas on land. A few, for example slugs and sea slugs, do not have shells.
This Euphemites lived between 360-290 million years ago, during the Carboniferous Period.
