A Scottish "all-steel" pistol made by Patrick Buchanan c 1725.
Patrick Buchanan was a Glaswegian gunmaker who was first recorded as a burgess and gunsmith in 1717. He was admitted to the Incorporation of Hammermen on 24 January 1718 and died in 1729. Buchanan signed this pistol on the lock-plate (making a spelling mistake in the process!) and it is thought to be the only all-metal pistol with a scroll-butt signed by a Glasgow gunmaker. The pistol is ornately decorated with engraving and silver inlays.
Glasgow Museums purchased this pistol in 1978 with financial assistance from the National Art Collections Fund.
