View of Ben Lomond

View of Ben Lomond by John Knox (1778-1845).

John Knox was a Glasgow artist who gained his reputation painting meticulously executed panoramic cityscapes and landscapes in the classic tradition, amongst them this beautiful image of the north western view from Ben Lomond, c 1834.

Knox also taught art. Among his pupils were Daniel Macnee, Horatio McCulloch and William Leighton Leitch, who all studied with Knox and became friends in the early 1820s. Many of Knox's pupils showed their work alongside their master in the Glasgow art exhibitions of 1821 and 1822, all exhibiting from Knox's address at 40 Dunlop Street.
