A Southern Port

A Southern Port by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928).

In 1923 Mackintosh and his wife Margaret Macdonald left Britain for France, where they lived for four years. Basing themselves at a small south-western town, Port Vendres (the harbour is depicted here), they travelled in the surrounding countryside and the nearby Pyrenees, enjoying the pleasures of the area - local food and drink, the scenery and the sunshine. Mackintosh developed new and highly finished pieces of work which focused on the landscape around him. He had plans for an exhibition in London of these watercolours but this new phase of his career was cut short by his untimely death in 1928.
