Jacquard looms

Jacquard looms at Templeton & Co's carpet factory.

Invented by Joseph Jacquard in France in 1801, the looms were introduced to Scotland in the 1820s. They incorporated a series of punched cards that "programmed" the loom to produce a pattern for cloth or carpet designs. The system has been greatly refined and improved over the years and Jacquard looms are still in use today. The process was hugely influential in the development of systems of computer programming.
