Saw sharpening

Sharpening saw teeth on a 60-inch diameter circular saw at William Cook & Sons' factory, c 1910. The operative sits on the left of the the photograph, the works manager is standing on the right.

The operative, wearing goggles to protect his eyes, sharpened the front and the bottom (the gullet) of the saw teeth with an emery or a carborundum (made from silicon carbide) wheel. A skilled worker could also shape the front angle of the teeth in the same operation.
