Rottenrow is one of Glasgow's oldest thoroughfares, and leads west from the Drygate. Owing to its proximity to the University and the Cathedral there were several manses and later many lodging houses built along the road. Thomas de Quincy, David Livingston and Thomas Chalmers are among the famous people believed to have stayed there. By the late 19th century many of these dwellings had fallen into disrepair, although many of Glasgow's oldest buildings survived there until the mid-20th century.
