A City of Glasgow Bank cheque from 1875, signed by Thomas Gillespie.
This cheque was issued by the Sandyford Branch of the bank. The City of Glasgow was one of Scotland's leading joint stock banks and provided lending facilities that helped fuel Glasgow's economic growth. Three years after this cheque was written, however, the bank was forced to cease trading with debts of over £6 million. Seven directors were charged with fraud, found guilty and sent to prison after the bank's failure.
