St Enoch Fire Station, c1890s.

The area around St Enoch Square had a heavy concentration of offices, whisky warehouses and other commercial premises and was considered at high risk from fires. A small sub-station was established there, with a staff of three or four men who were equipped with a fire cart (which can be seen here) as well as a 50 feet wheeled escape ladder. This small force provided the first response to any fire in the area, but could count on support from larger and better-equipped fire stations nearby.
