The Daphne was launched on 3 July. Nearly 200 workmen remained on board the ship during the launch, intending to proceed with the fitting-out work as soon as the ship left the slip-way. Unfortunately, the vessel heeled to port and capsized almost as soon as she hit the river, throwing many men into the water and trapping others below decks. Despite frantic efforts to rescue survivors from the wreckage, 124 lives were lost.
Stephen's subsequently recovered the ship and repaired her, renaming her the Rose.
