City Chambers, 1917

Tram conductresses pinning badges to the fur coats of women outside the City Chambers in George Square on a snowy day, 1917.

During the First World War James Dalrymple, the General Manager of Glasgow Corporation Tramways, encouraged his employees to enlist in the armed forces. The department employed women to take their places as tram drivers and conductresses.

The poster on the pillar behind the group is advertising war bonds (stock issued by the Government to raise money for the war effort) with the slogan "Tanks are Shields". The women are probably receiving their badges in return for purchasing bonds.
